#1965: Quire Feedback
Status: To-do

Make the column widths adjustable to the data they contain. I am specifically referring to the Due date column, and to a lesser extent the Tag column. I use an extremely wide screen, yet there seems to be no way for me to get the full word “Tomorrow” included (on my repeating tasks). These will always be displayed with most of the “w” cut off! As for the Tag column, I understand that these are user created and that some restrictions may have to be imposed, but only 5 characters! That is also mind boggling. We are in an age with super-wide screens, your program needs to adapt. This is not the mobile app, this is the browser version, so there is no excuse for the severe limitations.

• You can see from this screen shot that Quire totally wastes the available screen width on both sides of the task name, and it still cuts off part of the w in Tomorrow! • 5 characters for a Tag is insanely small.

Hi WTMaruk, Thanks for your feedback! 😃 Due date column: I’m sorry, I couldn't reproduce this. I’ve set tasks to repeat and the Tomorrow still shows the full word. Would you mind sharing a screenshot?

Tag column: You could hover over the tags to see the full tag names. The main reason why the width is fixed is because of technical challenges, but I understand why it would be frustrating sometimes, as other users also mentioned this feedback before. I will take it to our team.

Hi WTMaruk, I've forwarded your suggestion to our developer team and they will investigate further on this. Thanks again! 😃

Thank you Peggy

Peggy, I’m afraid we spoke too soon about the fixing of that “w” cut off issue. I checked again and it is connected to the font size. It seems the smaller the font size you use with your browser, the less space is allowed for these columns (to the right of the task name) relative to the task name column. I took a series of screen shots illustrating the problem.

Each of the screen shots is the same width for reference. As you can see, only the largest font size makes full use of the screen width available. As one reduces the font size, more space is “wasted” to the right and left of main section. As you can also see, the “w” in tomorrow still gets cut off at a fairly large font size. As one reduces the size more, even the bottom of the font gets cut off, as well as the tag being reduced to two partial characters. Then more cut offs, then gibberish. This is just simply adjusting the font sizes in the normal way with the browser. One expects to find readable text all the way through the scale, certainly at the small end of the scale.

This is very strange and troubling behaviour. So please have your techs deal with this. I use a 3840 x 2160 screen and I’m only using Quire in about half of that, so I want Quire to use that space appropriately, not cut off important parts only to waste it elsewhere.

Hi WTMaruk, we suggest only zoom in with web browser, instead of adjusting the font size. The tags' widths are fixed but will grow wider if you zoom in. Also, right now, if you hit Ctrl (or Alt on Mac), you can see more tags. Thanks. 😃

Peggy, Jun 11, 2019

Peggy, OMG. How do you think I was changing the font size if not by using the “zoom in” and “zoom out” feature on my browser? Is that even possible? If it is, I certainly don’t know how, nor do I care to know.

Let’s deal with the real problem. Quire is wasting a ton of screen space when viewed at “actual size”. I think you need to fix that, if you don’t, that’s fine. I’m just letting you know.

You say the tags’ widths are fixed but will grow wider if you zoom in. — That doesn’t make sense.

You say if you hit Ctrl, you can see more tags. — I don’t see more tags, so I don’t know what you mean, and I don’t know what that has to do with this issue. FYI. Macs do not have Alt keys.

Is there any way to make it more width or to show them below each other?

Mike Boon, May 29, 2019

I don’t want to get too bogged down with the details of these tags. I got your point about it not being the number of characters that was limiting, so I experimented with changing the font size in the browser. Oddly, when I decrease the font size it gives me more character space for the task, but LESS character space for the tag! And the reverse is true. Increase the font size and you get relatively less for the task, but more for the tag. However, I could only gain two extra characters doing this. And I see from your tag list that you basically get about the same 6-7 characters before the ellipsis. I guess this is a small victory. But my main point is that the program is not taking advantage of the available screen width. The one field that should get the benefits, is the task field, but even it for some reason does not use the available space. There is just so much wasted space that the restrictions seem crazy. There is no beneficiary.

quire just needs to use flexible stuff with @media

Hi WTMaruk, I was just about to tell you that our tech team had fixed the "w" cut off issue.

Peggy, May 31, 2019

Hi Mike, right now you can only see the full tag names by hovering over the tags. However, I’ve already passed the related feedback to our developer team. Thanks.

+1 on column widths. Here is what my quire looks like.

So much blank space and then all of the important information about project, assignees etc etc is incredibly truncated. I am sure I have no idea how to fix it, but something would be great.

Hi PN, Thank you for your suggestions! Currently, we do not support adjusting the column width in the Tree view. Nevertheless, we have passed it on to our Product Team for further discussion. We will keep you posted if we have any updates. Thank you.

Hi WTMaruk, The width of tags is fixed, but not counted by characters. I created some tags myself and it can show over 5 characters (see below). Would you mind sharing a screenshot of the width of your tag? Thanks in advance.
