#216: Quire Feedback
Status: Completed

It would be great if you had an iCal (Apple) compatible subscription for projects/tasks

Also, the option for tasks and sub tasks to have due dates but not appear on a calendar

Also, the description area for tasks does not render well outside of Quire (in calendar apps - on iOS for example) and HTML tags are revealed. Can there be a plain text/RTF option?

@crystal It turns out to be great (of course)! The description text syncs really well as plain text when iCal/Outlook is selected.

Hi @schofield, Unfortunately, we realized that there is no good solution for this. 😞 In short, iCal will display the URL while Outlook will not. Introducing a checkbox can solve the issue but may make the UI more complicated. So, it is probably better to show the URL twice rather than not showing it at all. That said, we will think more about it.

@crystal Have you noticed that the Quire task URL always appears twice in the description text that is synced to calendar entries? The one that starts: https://quire.io/*/*****/***/

@crystal Quire is a great app. And I really appreciate your quick response to feedback. Good work! Thanks.

Hi @schofield, Great, thanks for letting me know! 😃 And good question, I have noticed this. We will see what we could do about it and I will get back to you.

Hi @schofield, You can sync a Quire project to Google Calendar, and then add such calendar to your iCalendar. Try it and let me know if it works! I am not quite sure about your second point. You mean you would like to have the option for tasks and subtasks with due dates to NOT appear on the calendar? Also, about your third point, you would like to see the descriptions of tasks appear in the calendar? An example screenshot would be hugely appreciated. 😃

Crystal, Sep 5, 2016

@crystal My second point, yes, you've got me right! An option to 'hide task from calendar' (and subtasks) would be useful to me.

@crystal Manual changes aren't possible in the calendar as it is subscribed to and read-only isn't it? I had noticed the My tasks/All tasks sync options ... In the context of this conversation, it's given me a new thought about how to have things work as I would like. Thanks!

@crystal Hiding tasks/sub tasks would be useful for a couple of reasons: 1) all tasks appear as all-day, untimed events and if they share the same due date it looks really cluttered in sync'd/subscribed calendars. 2) as you say, not seeing specific tasks on the calendar would be good. This is useful so that not all task members get to see the due dates or details of sub-tasks they are not responsible for.

(deleted-LqZz), Sep 6, 2016

Hi @schofield, That makes sense. One thing you could do though is to manually add "due time" to the all-day tasks (events) in the calendar, so they look less cluttered. I guess if or when we have due time, it would make things easier for you? Regarding your 2nd point, I don't know if you have noticed this. When you sync to Google Calendar, you can click on "All tasks in this project" and choose "My tasks in this project" or "My tasks in all projects" instead. This way, you will only see the tasks you are responsible for.

Crystal, Sep 7, 2016

Hi @schofield, No problem. 😃 I think I have finally figured it out. If you copy the calendar URL and import it to iCal, you are able to manually make changes in iCal. But this way, whatever changes that have been made in Quire will not reflect in iCal as you are making changes to a copy. On the other hand, if you subscribe to the calendar by clicking on New Calendar Subscription in iCal and pasting the URL, the changes made in Quire will reflect but you are not able to make changes manually. Let me know if syncing My tasks in this project or all projects would help solve the cluttered issue. Thanks.

Crystal, Sep 8, 2016

Hi @schofield, Great! Do let me know how it turns out. 😃

Crystal, Sep 9, 2016

Hi @schofield, You are most welcome. And thank you for the detailed explanation and screenshot! 😃 We will look into it. Getting back to your second point, may I ask why you need to hide tasks (and subtasks) with due dates from the calendar? Perhaps there are specific tasks you don't want to see on there?

Crystal, Sep 6, 2016

@crystal Wow! I'm out with just a mobile device now but I'll explore that when I'm at my desk in the next few days. Quire = super-good already!

(deleted-LqZz), Sep 8, 2016

Hi @schofield, Just giving you a heads up: you can now choose to sync to iCal from the project options icon's "Sync to calendar." This way, the task description should be clean in plain text. 😃

Crystal, Sep 8, 2016

Thanks @crystal. Here's a screen shot of how a task description renders in iCal (this is an iPhone view, it's the same on all Apple devices). You can see that text entered as 'plain text' in Quire has (hidden in Quire) HTML tags showing in calendar apps (I guess they don't parse and render HTML - Markdown too) - so it can get to look pretty messy. It would be great for Quire to pass on the calendar data as plain text so that it can be of use and readable in external calendar apps.
