A timer to record time would be helpful. This could be incorporated in the heads up. If the task could be initiated the user clicks the timer and time is recorded. Else he deffera the task.
More advanced version is time budgeting. We budget a time for the task say 2 hours.. At the due date and time the heads up notifies. The user clicks the start timer button. Continues for 1 hour. Then he pause the task. He goes for lunch. Comes back and continue for another hour to complete the task.
If he has not completed the task them it will show as incomplete.
You can also provide a Pomodoro timer to make it still better.
