Filter by search term

Is it possible to filter lists according to a search term? As far as I can see, there's a search bar on the top right, but it only highlights individual items on the list.

For example, if I have multiple items in a list including the word "example", I'd like to be able to set a filter to search for "example" so the list only shows those entries. I could then perform batch actions on that filtered list.
