#1680: Quire Feedback

First off I would like to say so far I am very impressed with Quire.

I say that partly because I have used well over a dozen different task manager and tried out dozens move over the years. As it is currently Quire is one of the best task manager I have ever used and that is comparing it to some of the biggest names in this space. I am also saying that as a veteran QAE. Since it is my job to find the problems with a program I tend to do that on and off the job. Not only do you have a very good feature set the product seems very stable.

The one thing I have not see in Quire and to be fair I have rarely seen in any task management system is GTD. I am assuming you are familiar with David Alan's Getting Things Done productivity methodology. If not you might want to look up the book it is great.

The one features I am thinking of now is GTD's concept of "Some Day Maybe". It would be great if Quire had a way of selecting a group of tasks, or a whole project and setting it to "Some Day Maybe". Culturedcode's Things task manager does a fairly good job of this. Off hand it is the only task manager I know of that does. As I see if Quire could have a custom Organization for "Some Day Maybe" items to leave until they are needed. Of course I could simple move things from one Organization to another, but this has a few problem. First off it would require multiple clicks to get a fairly simple thing done. Secondly, and more important there would be no simple way to put that task, or project, back to the place it came from.

Another unique GTD concept is that of the "Next Action". I think one way of integrating this concept into Quire is to add a "Next Action" section to the My Tasks area of the left side bar. Of course the other half of that would be a way of telling Quire what group of tasks are related next actions. This might be done by allowing the user to select a group of tasks, right click and click on "Group as Next Actions". Of course how the user marks the next actions is a UX issue and that is not my area of expertise. Further more you seem to have very good UX people.

I have plenty more to share on this topic. If it is something you are interested in exploring and would like input let me know. On the other hand if this is beyond the scope of what you have planned for Quire I understand. No product can do everything. I see far too many bad programs and apps out there that try to do too much and end up doing nothing well. I hope Quire doesn't fall into that trap. As it is it is a great task manager, if you keep your focus right it could well be one of the best.

Hi Michael, I’m super glad to hear that you consider Quire to be one of the best out there! This really means a lot to our team! 😃 Also thanks for this elaborated feedback, there are some pretty interesting suggestions. I will definitely bring them to our team.

For the “ Someday maybe” feature, I think it could be done another way, with creating a global tag called “Someday”, this way the Someday tag could be added to tasks across different projects and you could search the tag in the search bar.

For the “Next Action” concept, I think it’s like task dependencies. i.e.When you finish one particular task, the next task will open up for you to continue. I think our tree structure in the list view can help with this problem. Simply just add the next action as a subtask, and you would be able to see which tasks should be done before the others.

Again, we really appreciate your kind comment, especially from a GTD expert like yourself. We’ve written a blog article on GTD method with Quire last year, check it out and kindly share your thoughts and other ideas with me. It’s always great to hear what kind of features our users would like to see in Quire!
