Updating the system for old and blind-ish people

I am sharing my quire with someone who is a technophobe as well as being elderly and can't see very well. I told him about how to open up the detail panel using >> and << and he couldn't even see it. I told him 3 times about it and each time, he couldn't see where it was. I don't understand why it's so invisible and very faint? Maybe you're trying to make it all very sleek etc, but I think for basic things like that, it would be helpful to have them easier to see and also just named outright rather than have to scroll with mouse to see what each thing is. Not everyone will be computer literate. If I was doing this system, I would have 'open detail panel' in words on the side with the appropriate symbol. Then 'close detail panel' in another word....thanks for your time
