#2244: Quire Feedback
Status: Completed

I don't know if this is a feature or what but

Whenever I "sort by date" all of my threads (task-subtask structures) get broken up and listed in order of date.

I expect the root list to get sorted and not EVERYTHING.

Now there is no possible way in Quire to see everything listed by date in a manageable way.

If I wanted to break-subtask structure when sorting by date then that would be a great option but I cannot imagine a case where I would want to compare the dates of tasks with subtasks arbitrarily.

I need to see what is due today while preserving its hierarchy. How is this not a thing!?!

/////////////////////////////

I really need a solution. Please don't tell me that you will add this to some list for a future functionality.

See in my image how stuff that is due next year is appearing at the top. I want that to appear at the bottom so I can get it out of the way. I need to see this structured list in order of date without breaking it up from task and subtask.

Hi @joshuarobison.biz , I've merged your feedback to #2290 so all of the relevant feedback stay in the same thread.

I have now read to other users posting about this here. Sorting by date should respect the hierarchy tree just like any tree list or file browser app. It's the most expected behavior.i first level tasks should be sorted by date and their subtasks should be arranged by date inside of them.

this benefits everybody. If the Quire devs use their own app , I cannot imagine that they would disagree. The current way things work just makes so many problems. Kills the usability of the mobile app and forces people to use a desktop with multiple windows open.

The only solution I have found is to go into the project folder and manually change the location of the super-tasks. (Basically manually sort them in that view.)

The thing is, I have a job that I do once a year and once I finish it I don't need to click on the complete button; I only need to change the date to the same time next year. But then I have an extra step of manually moving that task to the bottom. I guess I will just have to get used to that.

It's a second world problem I guess. I guess I just got used to the Todoist way of doing things and it will take time to get used to doing this manually.

The whole point of sort by date is to let the users see all of the tasks in chronological order.

The whole point of creating super-tasks and sub-task hierarchies is to show task hierarchy. I need to see task hierarchy by date. The default should not be to break hierarchy. Breaking hierarchy should be an option to toggle. The default should be to preserve hierarchy.

it means you prioritize the date view

I don't preserve the date view over my carefully crafted hierarchy. How can I see MY hierarchy in date view!?!?! That is obviously the default desire.

what possible case is there for breaking up all the hierarchy to flatten everything out by date -- useless.

Or you can view the tasks in My Tasks section and choose Sort by project.

"My Tasks" does not show super/sub-task hierarchies. This is not a solution to anything.

The only solution for now is manually sorting ALL THE THINGS

Hi Joshua,

The whole point of sort by date is to let the users see all of the tasks in a chronological order. Of course, it will mess up with the tree structure because if you choose to sort by date, it means you prioritize the date view.

You can either toggle on the breadcrumbs by pressing Alt on Mac or Ctrl on Windows to see the root tasks.

Or you can view the tasks in My Tasks section and choose Sort by project.

That's the closest workaround that we have right now. Thank you.

Hi Joshua, This is our current spec. In Quire, we try to give the biggest flexibility to users. That said, we treat parent task and subtask as their own individual task. Meaning users can set different due dates to each task, subtask will not inherit parent task’s due date. So when sorted by date, our system will order the tasks (parent task and subtask separately) in their belonged groups. If you're not entirely satisfied with this spec, I'm afraid you can only set everything manually. Thanks!

Todoist did this by default.

I'm not saying that I like Todoist better, or I wouldn't be here. But there is a world where people see this as the default expected behavior and I postulate that it is the majority.

Just sayn
