#474: Quire Feedback
Status: Completed

Hello,

I was wondering if there is any way to create task dependencies? Ideally these dependencies would be between tasks in different projects. e.g. hosting is after development, marketing is after web hosting etc.

Another question I had was about the ETA of an android app?

I would love to hear from you! Rutu

Hi Emeste, Thank you for putting so much thoughts into this. Would love to see a mockup (drawing) of what the UI would look like after you set the dependencies! Greying out the dependent tasks is a nice idea. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ And a visual example of adding options to indicate โ€œMust Start After / Beforeโ€ would be great too!

Hello everyone! Is there an update on this topic?

I think it's the main feature missing on this amazing platform.

If Task B from project Development is dependent on Task A from Project Hosting, I would want to have Task B greyed out till Task A is completed. That way I can focus on the core tasks to unblock all the dependent tasks.

โญ๏ธ I have merged your post with this post #277 already covering this request. Feel free to add your comments to that thread.

OK, I've been thinking about this for some time... and I came to a conclusion that constraints on task start/finish dates are not only more important than dependencies but could also act as them in certain situations. By adding to the task start date definition an option to indicate that the selected date is a "Must Start After" or "Must Start Before" constraint and allowing for the selected date to be a start or end date of another task (if the user chooses so), you get both the constraints AND the (resulting) depencencies. The same would apply obviously to "Must End After" / "Must End Before" constraints regarding the task end dates.

Cheers!

@emrezeo - No, not yet. We've just merged this thread to a main thread #277. I will keep you posted when I have further information.

Hey team, do we have an updated timeline on when this feature would be available? It makes sense to prioritise this feature as it is the very essence of project management.

another + for dependencies and 'greying' out of subsequent tasks

(deleted-NdoF), Aug 1, 2019

yes - that "greying out" is a good thing. The task would still be accessible and at the right place, but not so visible. At least you could tell it is not of priority right now. Maybe you could also offer the choice not to display them right now, as you can choose for finished and unfinished tasks.

Hi Karlheinz, Nice suggestions! ๐Ÿ‘

Hi Rutu, I see. We shall take your suggestion into consideration. Thanks!

YES! This is a glaring miss!! Please implement this

Hi Crystal, I've given some thought to the whole concept of adding Gantt charts to your fantastic tool and tried to understand some of the contrarian views against the usage of Gantt. It may of course be my simplification, but to me the main feature that Gantt charts introduce are task dependencies. And that alone can be achieved in so many alternative ways, quite often much more clear and simple. To wrap it up, I am a strong proponent of adding to each task an optional attribute that may point to the task that should be completed beforehand. This could even allow for visual presentation of the dependency-chain (eg. tasks represented as blocks connected by arrows). Creating a dependency could be achieved eg. like this:

  1. select the task you want to make dependent on another task,
  2. right-click and select a dedicated context-menu option, eg. "make dependent on..." or "select preceding task",
  3. click on the preceding task that you want completed beforehand.

There could also be an option of "obligatory" dependency - meaning that the dependent task remains inactive (greyed-out) until the preceding task is completed, as opposed to "voluntary" dependency which leaves the choice to the person deciding which task to process but still shows the dependency.

I'm sorry for such a lengthy elaboration... ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Good luck and thanks for your great work!

Hi Rutu, It is not possible at the moment, but we are considering it. Let's say you have task A from project Hosting and task B from project Development, and that B depends on A. What would you expect after you complete A (eg. receive a notification to remind you to start working on B)? As for the Android app, it is already our priority (see here). Will notify you once it becomes available. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
