#1716: Quire Feedback
Status: Completed

Is there a way I can mark the dependency of tasks in the project view? For example, I have 3 tasks. Is it possible to mark Task 3 can be executed only after 1 and 2 are done? This will make project level tracking much better.

Hi Jithu, Thanks for your feedback. We don’t support Task Dependencies right now, but this is actually in our plan to develop. Please stay tuned. 😃 The workaround would be using the hierarchy we have in task list view right now to track the dependencies, for example adding the Task 3 as a subtask under the Task 1 or Task 2, so you know you need to finish Task 3 first. It would also be great if you could share some visual ideas of task dependencies you have in mind. Thanks.

Hi Peggy,

Not really suggestions per say, but some thoughts on it:

I think the key thing is really about linking. Quire already handles dependency natively extremely well with hierarchy.

Where this breaks down though is where you have tasks in project A, that are dependant on / related to tasks in project B. Here you need someway to "link" the tasks.

What I do currently is something like "see #1640" and then have dependencies as subtasks of this.

But sometimes it would be nice to be able to edit the "linked" task "inline" so clicking the link would "expand" (similar to expanding a task hierarchy) the linked task. Importantly this isn't a copy of the tasks, there is a "single source of truth", you're simply editing it inline

A common use case is a project with very high level tasks ("huge objective A"). Then you have seperate projects for each of the high level tasks ("huge objective A"). It would be nice if these were linked better and I didn't have two copies of the same data.

Another similar example is a project with long term (e.g. yearly) high level tasks, and then another for "current" tasks. right now these are quite disconnected. so if i'm trying to expand on the detail (create subtasks) for a high level task, I either place them in the "current" project and lose the broader context, or place them in the "long term" project and don't see them when working day to day on my "current" project.

i.e. it can be difficult to go from long term, strategic goals, to planning of day to day progress... This might be a broader thing than task dependency, but I think it's definitely related...

sorry for the essay!

Thanks!

Hi @jithu.n , it seems like the Gantt chart wasn’t attached successfully. Would you mind attaching it again? Thanks.

⭐️ I have merged your post with this post #277 already covering this request. Feel free to add your comments to that thread.

Please see GaaNTT chart above.

Hi @yozza0 , We are still thinking about the approaches for task dependencies, so it’s great that you shared your ideas with us. 👍 Anyway, I will bring this to our discussion.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. We are good with this now. Will send diagram of scenario in couple of days

Hi Peggy,

interesting to hear you are planning functionality around "task dependencies"! Are you able to share any details on this?

I think the task linking suggestions I had here: #1640 could be useful for this? Or are you envisaging something different?

Yozza, Mar 14, 2019

Hi @yozza0 , We don’t have the details for task dependency yet, we are still gathering suggestions from users and doing research ourselves. #1640 is useful, thanks for it. Also if you have other suggestions on it, please do share. A visual idea would also be so helpful! Thanks! 😃
