Is it possible to have a gantt chart view of my project and tasks ? Also can you make a higher task, build up of smaller tasks, all connected (one with a predecessor) ?
Cheers,
OSS
Hi @backup4g and @adam.younis , thank you for your feedback. I had added your guys' suggestions to our internal list, we will make sure to take them into consideration when we start designing our own Gantt chart/timeline. π

Hi Oleg, I assume you are speaking of a Gantt chart view with βtask dependenciesβ? A visual example (screenshot) of what you would like would be awesome. FYI, we will introduce a native calendar view in the future. Perhaps it would help. π

I think for me, most critically, and in keeping with the flexible nature of the app as it's currently designed, I would expect that the duration belongs to a task, but the start time is a property of a "scheduling instance".
All tasks can have a duration, but not all tasks will be scheduled to a time and date. Placing a task into a schedule creates the start (and end) time, so they are properties of that instance, rather than the task.
As far as how to handle conflicts, that can be done on insertion into the schedule. This way it is impossible to accidentally create hidden conflicts because the user will have to manually be attempting to place two things in the same space which the UI can draw attention to (generating a warning / error / bounce etc), and the user can resolve themself.

It would be a great feature to have. We need the ability to create task dependencies, group it, and add completion percentage.

@joshuarobison.biz even if you don't have clients, it's important to have an idea about where your time is going to be spent in order to be more efficient. You'll be able to better prioritise tasks, and arrange your workload more elegantly in your day.
Often times I'm working on things that can be "polished" for an arbitrary amount of time. If I budget an hour for a task like that and schedule a 15 minute task directly after, I'm more likely to finish the hour and move on than to spend that additional 15 minutes on the first task.
But I can't do any of that if I don't have estimates, and it's a lot nicer if I can view those estimates in a graph.

Yes, calendar or gantt chart are very needed! Waiting for it π

Hi Tomi, Thanks for your suggestion! π A native calendar is in our future plan, after introducing it, it might help with your planning. Also, our team is working on open API, so it would probably be possible for you to integrate Quire with other software in your favor in the future. You can follow us on Twitter for latest updates.

A Gantt chart is not a calendar. I really love Quire.io, but this missing feature prevents me from planning all my projects with this site. For those of us who plan projects with 40+ activities, it is not feasible to manage the due dates with a calendar view. We need to string together tasks using predecessor/successor relationships with durations and let the software calculate the dates.

Building on what @adam.younis suggested, users should be able to assign StartTime, EndTime, and just as importantly, DurationTime. Time estimates for projects can be easily determined with just task dependencies and task DurationTime. That is often the first step in evaluating and planning for a project. As a project gets started, StartTimes or EndTimes (deadlines) are assigned to tasks.
Note: any two Time assignments automatically creates the third, in any order. EndTime and Duration automatically creates StartTime.
The challenge, programattically, becomes how to prevent, detect, and present conflicting times vs. dependencies between tasks. And to do this in a nice UX framework.

Hi Adam, Thanks for the suggestions! I will add them to our list! π

@joshuarobison.biz 99% of my work can be broken down into tasks that last "minutes". If i could assign duration estimates to each task, i could create an estimate of a whole tree. I write software, so for example this would allow me to estimate an entire feature by adding up the tasks, and budgeting my time on a chunk of tasks each day.
Gantt charts are a way of plotting that information visually and scheduling it against a linear calendar, which then can be used to set more realistic deadlines based on workload.
Adam Younis, Sep 2, 2019
If I could add another request to this: One of the most critical features that a Gantt-like view would depend on is a "duration" field for tasks (in minutes). Even if it's just an estimate, being able to "add" child-task times to estimate parent-task time would be a huge feature.
If I could then drop these tasks into a linear schedule, and work against them during my day, that would basically change the way I work. Gantt is one way to achieve this, and would be suitable, but it's imperative that tasks have estimated duration.
Bonus points if you integrate a pomodoro counter to log actual minutes spent on an active task.
Adam Younis, Apr 2, 2019
Hi Franco, would you mind sharing more details on what you meant by "group it"? Do you mean you would only want to see the task dependency of a branch instead of the whole tree's?

Time planning tools are missing, they should be provided either by integration or build-in style. I have multiple projects, there is no way to plan & schedule my day among tasks, projects and goals let alone for the whole week (or months, years). I'm not saying gantt is the only way to go, but probably one to consider. It's important to know what one is supposed to do, but managing your time to archive those goals is equally important.

Hi @joelegner , thanks, we will look into it! A lot of solutions out there have gantt chart, but we would like to know what specific feature in gantt charts do users like more.
Peggy, Apr 3, 2019
Hi Joe, thanks for letting us know, we are still working on gathering different suggestions from our users for Gantt chart/timeline view. Trying to figure out a better visual approach for this feature. π
Peggy, Mar 29, 2019
Peggy - Thanks for the interest. The Gantt chart format dates back to the 1910s and is well-established in industry. I won't name any of your competitors here, but if you put "gantt chart online" into Google, you can find out how others have implemented it.

Hi all - Quire Timeline is now available. You can switch from List to Timeline view with just one click at the upper right corner of the workspace.
π Visit our blog for more details: https://quire.io/blog/p/timeline.html
Please open up a new thread if you have a suggestion for us. Thank you! π
